For Schengen Visa Application via Spain Embassy - Visiting Family/Friends

Filipino nationals wishing to visit family or friends in Spain must obtain a letter of invitation as part of their visa application. The letter is an invitation to visit from a relative or close friend who is a citizen or legal resident of Spain. Contrary to what most people think, it is not a document written by the Sponsor living in Spain (the one who invites you). This is an official document.

Who can apply for a letter of invitation to travel to Spain?

This letter can be applied for by a Spanish person or by a foreigner who is legal resident in the country and who meets the requirements.

Where do I obtain it?

The letter of invitation in Spain can be requested and processed at the police station in the

sponsor's place of accommodation.

Do you need to have the original of the letter or is a printed copy sufficient?

When the letter of invitation is obtained, the sponsor should send it by post to the person he or she is inviting, as only the original document is valid. No copies will be accepted.

Does the letter of invitation guarantee entry to Spain?

No. The letter of invitation is simply one of the requirements for certain cases. The letter of invitation does not under any circumstances exempt the foreigner from any of the other requirements for entry into Spain.

How long does it take to get an invitation letter for a visa?

It depends on each police office how long they take to process the invitation letter, at some police offices they issue it after a week, in some they can take up to one month. We recommend to prepare early and consider the time it will take to send the original to the person visiting Spain.
